Sherritt Suspends Cuban Mining Activities Amid Fuel Shortages
In a statement, the company said, "The Corporation expects to pause mining operations and place the processing plant on standby within the next week during which time, planned maintenance activities will be performed."
The firm explained that it had received notice that scheduled fuel shipments to its Moa facility would not proceed as planned, with no confirmed timeline for when deliveries might resume. It added that it is "actively engaging with relevant counterparts and evaluating all options for sourcing input commodities."
While the Cuban site faces interruptions, the company indicated that its refining operations in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, continue unaffected for now. "Currently, there is no immediate impact on operations in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta," the statement noted, adding that nickel and cobalt production for sale remains ongoing.
However, the company cautioned that its existing feedstock inventory is projected to sustain refinery operations only until mid-April.
Sherritt International Corporation describes itself as a global leader in hydrometallurgical technologies used to extract and refine nickel and cobalt. According to its website, it operates the only major cobalt refinery and one of just three nickel refineries in North America.
The operational pause comes as Cuba’s fuel shortages deepen following a reduction in oil shipments from its longtime partner Venezuela. At the same time, US President Donald Trump has warned that tariffs could be imposed on countries supplying oil to the island, further complicating the energy situation.
