Trump Confirms Venezuela as New Oil Supplier for India, Open to China
“We've already made a deal. India is coming in, and they're going to be buying Venezuelan oil, as opposed to buying it from Iran. So, we've already made that deal, the concept of the deal, but China is welcome to come in and buy oil,” Trump said while speaking aboard Air Force One during a flight to Palm Beach, Florida.
His comments followed recent discussions between New Delhi and Caracas aimed at strengthening ties, after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Friday that both sides agreed to “further deepen and expand bilateral partnership” during talks with Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodriguez.
Earlier this month, a US military operation in Venezuela resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, who were taken to New York and entered not-guilty pleas to drug trafficking and weapons-related charges.
Trump later said his administration would oversee Venezuela and its oil resources during what he described as a transitional phase.
The US president has also imposed 50% tariffs on Indian exports, citing India’s continued purchases of Russian oil as the reason for the measure.
Commenting on remarks by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who said her government is exploring ways to support Cuba amid what she described as a severe humanitarian situation following tighter US sanctions on countries supplying oil to the island, Trump rejected the idea that such a crisis was inevitable.
“There does not have to be a humanitarian crisis,” he said.
“I think they probably would come to us. Cuba would be free again. They'll come to us. They'll make a deal,” he added.
Asked about the status of US policy toward Iran, Trump said Tehran is “seriously talking” with Washington and expressed hope that the talks would lead to “something that’s acceptable.”
“Certainly, I can't tell you that, but we do have very big, powerful ships heading in that direction. I hope they negotiate something that's acceptable,” he said.
